About Honoring Our Patriots

Honoring Our Patriots is a public tribute to the men and women who supported American independence during the Revolutionary War. Our focus is historical context, remembrance, and the connections that emerge when we recognize service in the same places and under the same commanders.

This site is currently built around the Yorktown Campaign, leading to the Patriot victory in October 1781. Over time, additional campaign modules may be added.

What you can do here

Browse patriots.
Explore patriots connected to Yorktown and see how their service relates to the larger campaign.

Honor a patriot.
If you descend from a patriot—or simply want to recognize their contribution—you can honor them. Honors are public counts that reflect commemoration, not verification.

Discover connections.
Many records mention a local captain, lieutenant colonel, or colonel. We use that “lowest known commander” to connect patriots who likely served in the same unit or vicinity. These connections are meant to encourage community and shared remembrance.

A note on accuracy and interpretation

Revolutionary War records vary widely in detail and reliability. Some patriots served in militia units intermittently. Some provided supplies or other support. Some records preserve only a local commander’s name, without dates or locations.

For that reason, this site uses a simple indicator:

  • High — strong evidence the patriot was present in the Yorktown vicinity or directly involved in the campaign
  • Medium — reasonable likelihood based on a validated Yorktown campaign commander link or other credible context
  • Low — minimal information so far; a starting point for future research

These levels are not proof of service at a specific event. They are meant to help visitors understand what the available evidence suggests and to encourage careful, respectful interpretation.

What this site is not

  • This is not a lineage-proving service.
  • This is not a replacement for primary sources, pension files, local records, or scholarly research.
  • This is not a user profile platform. We do not build pages around user photos, personal stories, or social features.

The hero here is the history—and the patriots.

Privacy and participation

There are no accounts and we do not collect email addresses. Honoring a patriot is anonymous and is recorded only as a public count (and, when available, a selected descendant branch from an admin-curated list of the patriot’s children).

Data sources and curation

Commander links and campaign context are curated over time using reputable historical sources. Some entries may begin as provisional and become more refined as additional evidence is found.

If you notice an error or have source-based information that could improve a patriot or commander record, please share it through the contact method provided on this site.
